Review:

This volume follows a boy, scarred from an experience with a woman, and how he slowly overcomes that with someone new in his life.
This was actually pretty good. I appreciated that we got a full story for one couple here, that the main character actually had some serious issues to overcome and got some focus on it. I thought it was portrayed pretty well, actually, and the artwork was pretty good.
Overall a fine one-shot yaoi volume.

Manga Review: Author's Pet by Deathco Cotorino

Rating (Out of 5): ~2
Publisher: June/DMP
Release Date: 2008
Volumes: 1.
Spoilers?: No.

Goodreads Synopsis:

High school student Yuta bumps into a man outside the train station, injuring him. The man's name is Tsubaki Nishijima, occupation novelist. In exchange for crippling his arm, Tsubaki demands Yuta work like a slave every day!

Review:

This volume has several stories in it. The title story is a couple chapters, and it stars a guy who starts ghost writing for an author when he's at fault for the guy getting hurt and unable to write himself. This is a bit dramatic but just okay, as the author ends up taking advantage of the guy, with a rude, cocky attitude.
None of these stories really stood out for me, and the one that did wasn't very good. I didn't really like any of the characters, the story wasn't very well written, and the artwork wasn't very good; it was all a bit one-dimensional.

Manga Review: The Devil's Secret by Hinako Takanaga

Rating (Out of 5): ~3
Publisher: 801 Media/DMP
Release Date: 2008
Volumes: 1.
Spoilers?: No.
Buy it here: Amazon. RightStuf.

Goodreads Synopsis:

Father Mauro lived a peaceful life in a small town ministering to his community. That is, until he found a wounded demon (?) in the bushes of the church garden. While Raoul looks like a demon, complete with horns and a tail, he doesn’t act like the typical demon. Playful? Yes! Mischievous? Yes! Outright evil? Well… that depends on the definition. Does seducing men of the cloth count as evil – especially if they like it?

Review:

This is more middle-road Takanaga. Not as good as her current stuff, but better than her early-early stuff. The artwork is getting better, the characters are better written; more steamy scenes, which is always a plus.
The first two chapters feature a priest and a devil. Pretty light-hearted and cute. Next we have a student romance, then a winter romance, all one-shots. A couple of pretty cute boy characters, and a few with some pretty good smut featured.
All in all, not a bad yaoi one-shot volume. I'll keep it.

But there's a catch - God made him a promise that he must keep, and if he breaks it, there'll be consequences...

Review:

First of all, this is not a very explicit book. There’s only one possible sex scene in it, near the end, and nothing is shown.
But this was such a cute, warmhearted book. And the artwork is very soft and pretty to look at. If you like the cover, you’ll like it.
The main story is about a boy who lost his cat when he was young, and he was very close to it. And then his cat comes back to life as a boy years later, and he doesn’t quite know how to handle it. But his human cat loves him wholeheartedly. Their story is so cute and so sweet, and the ending is perfect. There’s also a little extra about them at the end that is so sweet.
There’s only one other one-shot in this book, and it’s about a guy who falls in love with the florist in his town. It’s a very sweet story, too.
The artwork was very nice, and then the stories were really good too. I love the development of the characters, and none of it was rushed. Exactly what I was looking for, and done very well.

Manga Review: Itazura Na Kiss, Volume 2, by Kaoru Tada

Rating (Out of 5): ~1-1.5
Publisher: Digital Manga Publishing/DMP
Release Date: 2010

Volume: 1. 3.

Goodreads Synopsis:

She's excited and looks forward to spending more time with Naoki - or, so she thought Now she has competition She's tall, beautiful, smart, and good at sports... she's practically perfect Is Kotoko ready to take on a nemesis?

Review:

I’m struggling with the decision to quit this series.
I really don’t like it. The characters are weak and one-dimensional and annoying and I don’t like any of them—not a one. The story isn’t any better. The artwork is extremely weak, and I don’t care for looking at it.
I don’t want to read anymore. But I already own the next four volumes, so I feel like I have to. But I think I might just sell them and get it over with. It’s ridiculous how long I’ve been putting it off already (reading it, that is) (like two years).
But there are no remarkable traits in Kotoko. She’s weak and annoying, falling for Irie for no reason at all, no matter how much of a jerk he is. I don’t care for Irie at all, and don’t see why anyone else does, either. He’s a jerk, hides it not at all, and has done nothing nice for Kotoko to earn her affection. And then his mom keeps pushing them together, practically forcing them to get married.
And now they’re all in college, which would seem great, only nothing at all has changed. They still go to school like in high school, hang out with the same people, and Kotoko is still in the bottom class. It’s ridiculous.
This series has no redeeming qualities for me, and I really want to quit it. There’s no reason for me not to, really.

Manga Review: Itazura Na Kiss, Volume 1, by Kaoru Tada

Rating (Out of 5): 2
Publisher: Digital Manga Publishing/DMP
Volumes: 14 omnibus/23 separate
Spoilers?: Very Minor.

Goodreads Synopsis:

High school senior Kotoko Aihara has had a crush on Naoki Irie since his freshman year. Unfortunately, a few things are discouraging her from him: he's a member of "Class A," the top ranking class in school, whereas she's in "Class F"; he gets the top score on every exam; and he's so smart, popular, and handsome that he's been class president every year. When Kotoki finally musters up the courage to present him with a love letter, though, Naoki outright refuses it, telling her point blank - with a look of disgust and boredom - that he doesn't like "stupid girls." Poor Kotoko's worst nightmare

Something Specific:
Quote:

  • "I guess geniuses have their own problems, too." The fact that Kotoko says this earnestly just really bothers me. In the review I explain more about how I don't like her, but her saying this just really annoyed me. Because, I just, don't understand how she could think that just because someone is smart (since she isn't) that they would have no problems. Plus, there's the fact that the boy is a complete asshole, and i see that as a very big problem, bit everyone else seems to just ignore it. I just don't understand.

Review:

I was really hoping to like this book. I bought several books in this series, for a really good price, online a while ago. And now, I’m a little unhappy about that decision. I’m still planning to read all of the volumes that I got, however, and hope that it gets better.
This book is about a girl, Kotoko, who is in love with a boy, Naoki. She confesses to him and gets rejected on the first page, decides to give up but is depressed, and then finds out that she’s going to be moving in with him, because her house burned down and her father’s friend will let them stay at their house, where Naoki lives. From there, Naoki’s mother and both his and Kotoko’s fathers’ are trying to push Naoki and Kotoko into a relationship. Naoki also has a little brother, who’s a brat. Kotoko’s friends are supportive of her, and she also has a friend, Kin-Chan, who is in love with her.
I don’t like Kotoko. She’s weak, -willed and otherwise. After getting rejected and moving in with Naoki, she tries acting like she doesn’t like him anymore, but at the smallest inkling to him liking her, she blushes and falls for it. Every. Time. She’s just not very smart, or helpful, or anything that would make me like her. I really hope she bucks up or something in the later books.
I also don’t like Naoki. He’s just a straight-up jerk, really; an asshole, even. He yells at her, at points he will give in and help her with something (like cooking or homework) but is usually unwilling. He’s generally just a jerk and I don’t see what the appeal is. At all.
Her friends are alright. Their parents are pushy and I’m not particularly fond of them, nor too bothered by them. Naoki’s little brother is a brat, as I said.
My biggest problem with this series is the art. The art is kind of horrible, honestly. The faces aren’t pretty, the bodies are oddly shaped at times. It’s just straight-up not pretty and I don’t like it. It’s honestly what made this book so hard to read. I mean, I can’t stand the characters, either, but it wouldn’t be so bad if they were at least pretty to look at. And another thing, is that sometimes the art is just fine, in a panel or two; sometimes, the art is actually not bad when the background characters are drawn! Not too often, but once in a while. And it just makes me wonder: why can’t it look like that throughout the whole thing? Ugh.
So, as I said, I already have the next book, so I will be reading it soon. Probably. Not too long, at least, because I do want to get through this series; I just hope it gets better.
