Blog Tour (Excerpt & Review): Getting Off Easy (Boys of the Big Easy, #4) by Erin Nicholas

GOE - BT banner.jpg

Getting Off Easy, an all-new sexy, single parent romantic comedy from New York Times bestselling author Erin Nicholas is available now!

GettingOffEasy300.jpgNew Orleans firefighter, James Reynaud’s true love is hanging out in the jazz clubs on Frenchmen Street and playing piano with some of the best musicians in the city. But driving his cute, bookworm neighbor Harper Broussard crazy is right up there on his list of favorite things.

The buttoned-up linguistics professor across the hall is a little older, a lot smarter, and way too good for him. And she knows it. But wow is she beautiful when she blushes.

She’s equally gorgeous when she’s saving his butt. Because now things just got serious. A baby has been, literally, dropped off on his doorstep and to say he’s in over his head is an understatement. Not that Harper knows anything about babies either. But at least they now have something in common.

Excerpt:

Harper reached out to lift the baby off of James, but just as her hand touched his back, James stirred.
She froze.
“Professor?”
His voice was husky from sleep, low and gravelly, and Harper’s belly flipped, heat sliding from her stomach lower, between her legs. They were in his bedroom. One of them was in bed. And that voice. And the nickname. She could hardly be blamed for her reaction.
“Hey,” she said softly.
“You okay?”
It was the middle of the night, and he was the one asleep with the thing that had just turned his life upside down, but he was asking about her? She never came to him with needs. He came to her. She nodded. “I thought I’d take him so you could get more comfortable.”
He looked down at the baby, and seemingly instinctively, his hand slid from the baby’s butt to his back. James’s hand was huge on the tiny baby, and Harper swallowed hard at the sweet picture. “He’s okay.”
“You sure? I don’t mind.”
He looked up at her. He was clearly still sleepy, maybe not fully awake. “You wanna help?” he asked.
She nodded. “Yeah.” She felt terrible for leaving earlier. It had gone against every instinct except the one that screamed at her to protect her heart no matter the cost. But she was afraid she was far past the point of that being possible.
“Then come here.”
Harper wet her lips. “Come… there?”
“Yeah.” He reached for her with his free hand and caught her around the wrist, tugging her forward.
She could have easily pulled back, broken free, resisted. But she let him urge her onto the mattress.
Harper knelt with a knee next to his hip. “How does this help?”
“Gets you up against me,” he said, his voice still sleep roughened.
Her heart skittered. “That’s helpful?”
“Can’t imagine how it will hurt.” He gave her a sleepy, but still devastatingly sexy smile. “This way you’re here if he does need something.”
Well, he had a point.
Harper stretched out on the mattress beside James. He put his arm up above his head again, not holding her, but definitely exposing plenty of surface area for her to be up against.
Oh, what the hell. She wouldn’t sleep well at her place now, wondering what was going on over here. This way she was very much here for whatever went on. And she’d wanted to be up against him for a few months now. Lord only knew what the next few days were going to bring with the baby and everything. She might as well enjoy this moment while she had it.
She scooted closer. His body was hot and hard. She swallowed with some difficulty.
Then the baby made a little grunting sound and curled and stretched against James.
This was so not how she’d ever pictured being in bed with James Reynaud. That was for sure.

Review:

~4 Stars
The final book in the New Orleans-based series by Erin Nicholas. Took a little longer for this one to come out, but it was definitely worth it, and was a nice ending to the series.
James is a firefighter and in a jazz band, and people know he's always there to help them. His university professor neighbor, Harper, was quiet and reserved next door, up until he started bringing his surprise problems to her for help, and thus started their courtship. When James discovers a baby at his door, it causes a whole new adventure for them to discover together.
James is a really great guy. He's always willing to help people, and they know it, and he knows it. Harper is similar, but in a different way. She's a teacher, she's smart and quiet, more reserved than he is. It takes a while for her to accept the ways that James is pulling her in. I definitely related to Harper a few times in this. She's a quiet reader, and yet she worked really well with James, because they were also a lot alike.
The ending was actually a big surprise to me. I hadn't quite clued in to where the baby came from, and I definitely didn't expect it to go in the direction that it went, to that extent. And I'm actually really happy with where it ended up. There's zero disappointment in me for this; it makes perfect sense for the characters, and I think is a really sweet way for their relationship and their dynamic to go. I was genuinely surprised and delighted by how their story concluded.
This was a really fun book in the series. I'm sad to see this arc of stories ending, as I've loved all of them. I'm curious for what's next, though.

An ARC was provided by the author and Social Butterfly for an honest review. Thank you so much!

NaE - Teaser 1 AN.jpg

Excerpt:

Lexi could feel Caleb’s breath on her lips, and his bunched muscles under her palm were hot and hard. She stared at his mouth. He stared at hers. And she decided that if he wasn’t going to look at her breasts, looking at her mouth like he was starving and she was a grilled BLT—his favorite food in the world—was just fine with her.
Being compared, even in her own head, to a grilled BLT might not seem sexy, but in her mind, it so was. Caleb devoured those sandwiches. He’d do almost anything for one. He made sexy moaning sounds when he first tasted them. And he’d proclaimed that hers were the best he’d ever tasted. Yeah, put that way, along with the schnapps still coating her brain, it was strangely sexy.
Caleb.”
She watched his pupils dilate and his jaw clench.
Her hand went to the front of his shirt and she bunched it in her fists, watching his eyes. He didn’t try to stop her. Then she tugged, urging him forward.
And he came, the hand next to her hip pressing into the mattress as she tipped her head to one side. Their lips touched. Softly. Briefly. But she felt it all the way to her bones. Heat, want, relief. She suddenly had to have more. She made a little almost-a-sob sound and licked her tongue along his lower lip.
Lex.”
Her name was more of a groan than a word. It was the sexiest thing she’d ever heard.
Caleb,”she breathed.
Then the next groan became the sexiest thing she’d ever heard. It was a combination of hunger and resignation, and she felt like he’d just set her nerve endings on fire.
Suddenly, Caleb’s hand came up to cup the back of her head, his fingers diving into her hair. And he took over.
His mouth opened over hers and his tongue stroked deep and hot. Every glide of his tongue felt as though he was running a finger over her clit. Some were firmer, some softer, some longer, some shorter, and her need ratcheted up with each one.
She ran her hands over his chest to his shoulders and up the sides of his neck, loving the hard muscles and the heat under her palms. Then she slid her hands down his sides to the bottom of his shirt. She slipped her hands underneath, moaning as she met hot, bare skin. He sucked in a quick breath and she smiled against his lips, loving having an effect on him.
And suddenly she was on her back and Caleb was moving over her. Her hands slid to his back, the muscles there bunching as he braced himself above her, still kissing her like it was his job. Instinctively, she slid her legs apart and he settled between them. The comforter was between them, but she felt him hard and hot and deliciously heavy against her. The feel of his cock pressed against her made her ache. She’d done that to him. She’d made him hard.
Hallelujah.

Review:

Rating: ~4
Genre: Adult Contemporary Romance
Spoilers?: No.

These books are automatic buys for me, and as soon as they arrive on my kindle, I can't help but devour them. I had already started another book when this one arrived, and even though I told myself I would wait, I started it that night. I couldn't help myself, and once I start, I can't stop. Barely long enough to work, even.
Caleb is the hot older firefighter who is taking care of his niece, and Lexi is a young, single mother, who's just recently finished nursing school. They both work long hours, and have been co-parenting for a while now, just without the relationship part. When Caleb discovers that Lexi needs a place to stay, he insists that she move in with him.
Despite Caleb's impression that Lexi needs looking after, that she's meek and too young and impressionable, she proves to him that she's not. She can take care of herself, whether he wants her to or not. But Caleb has some trust and control issues, and Lexi and him have to come to an agreement on a few things.
While this is definitely a steamy romance, it's also very much a family, and parent, story, as most of this series is. Caleb's niece has some health issues that he discovers in this book, and he has a hard time dealing with that. Lexi's son is rather easy, but he's still young and has tantrums sometimes. Both kids get quite a lot of attention, as we watch how each parent handles situations and teaches them things. It's really heartwarming, most of the time, too.
Now, the romance. Caleb and Lexi have been attracted to each other for a while now. Caleb has always held back, ignoring any possibility of a relationship, whereas Lexi just plain doesn't think he's interested at this point. There are some mixed messages at first, but finally, Caleb decides to let go of his restrictions on it.
Which goes into my favorite part of the book. Lexi is sexually submissive, and Caleb mistakes this for meekness at first. The way that Lexi acknowledges this to herself, how she knows she has somewhat odd fantasies and has to consider how important they are to her, when she doesn't think Caleb will be able to handle it, is so great. And then the way that Lexi tells Caleb these things, and how they have real discussions about this aspect of their relationship, is so well done. I was surprised by this part of the story, and I really appreciate how it's all talked about and handled. And then, when things get started, it is super hot. Nicholas doesn't seem to think this is her steamiest story, (which means I must need to read more of her older stories,) but it definitely was to me. It might be the light D/s elements, but I've also thought that her more recent stories have gotten steamier than her previous ones. I'm definitely happy about it, though.
This might be one of my favorites so far, but even saying that is hard, because I've loved so many of her books. I'm excited to read the next one, (as the hint we got in this book was very promising,) and I'm already super excited for her next series. I really want Owen's story, honestly; but I do love all of the guys, and want to meet their women. Though, I do think I'll miss the parent element of this series.

TL;DR: I loved it. It was hot and intense but also super sweet, especially with the kids. Would highly recommend if you enjoy contemporary romance.

Review:

I've been following Nicholas' series for a while now, and she has quickly became one of my favorite romance authors. From the first book I picked up, I was hooked.
This new series features boys who live in New Orleans; they know how to have a good time, but they're also all part of a single-parents group. They aren't all technically single—as Lindsey isn't—but most of them are alone in one way or another and need the support of other parents in similar situations and experiences. They all have different parenting styles, they're of varying ages, and they throw ideas and worries at each other, and get feedback on them.
Lindsey isn't single, but her husband Matt is in the military, and so she only gets to see him a few times a year, if that. She's grown used to parenting on her own, and her and Matt have learned to communicate with each other. Even though Matt is so far away, they've adapted so that it still feels like he's there, as much as they can. They get time to video-chat, including him and the kids alone, and he's there to help her make big decisions.
But this year, he surprises her with a Christmas visit. One of the other single-parent members work with him for a fun way to surprise her.
It was obvious how intense their chemistry was from the very beginning. They love each other so much, even if they can't be together all that often. They're open and honest with each other, not afraid to be firm but also very comfortable with teasing each other.
I will admit I got pretty emotional while reading this book. I probably would have actually cried, if I weren't at work while reading certain scenes. It's both extremely heartwarming, and very painful, how much they love each other, how badly Matt wants to be there for his family but also wants to be doing what he's doing. And how much Lindsey misses him, but supports what he's doing. When they're officially reunited, and Lindsey gives in and cries, it's so overwhelmingly sweet. It just warms me up inside.
I definitely wish this had been a longer book, as I wanted more time with Lindsey and Matt together. I wanted them to have some more sexy-times, sure, but I also wanted to see Matt with the kids some more. I wanted to see Lindsey accepting her new dog. I wanted... more. In a good way, because I loved every piece of this little story.
I really hope that we get more of their story. Since this was a little in-between novella, I hope maybe we get another one later in the series. I want to check in with these two again.
This one was definitely another favorite in the series, and I couldn't put it down. I can't wait for the next one, either.

I'm lucky enough to be included in the release tour of Eggnog Makes Her Easy, a novella for the Boys of the Big Easy series. I've read most of Erin Nicholas' recent releases, at least three of her series, and she is definitely one of my favorite romance authors, always an auto-buy at this point. The previous two books in this series were great, so I would definitely recommend picking up the freebie above, if you haven't already.
I'll be reading this one as soon as it arrives on my kindle, I'm sure, and the review will be up next week. I seriously cannot wait--it's showing up just at the right time for me, honestly. Plus, I'm ready for some Christmas books.
