Blog Tour: Excerpt & Review: Sugarcoated (Hot Cakes, #1) by Erin Nicholas

Sugarcoated - BT Banner.jpg

"You can always count on Erin Nicholas for fun, sexy contemporary romance."―Melissa Foster, New York Times bestselling author
Sugarcoated, an all-new sexy and laugh-out-loud standalone romance from New York Times bestselling author Erin Nicholas, is out now!

Sugarcoated300
She's his best friend's little sister. He's known her all his life. He's practically part of the family. There is nothing either of them could do to surprise the other at this point.
Then she showed up in his bedroom in lingerie and asked him to take her V-card.
Now, that was a surprise.
Aiden is pretty sure Zoe was equally surprised when he told her no.
To say that he didn't handle it well would be a massive understatement. Almost as massive as the amount of work he's going to have to do now to convince her that he wants her. Forever.
Right after he tells her that he's bought the company that's her bakery’s biggest competitor.
Maybe if he tells her he’s in love with her first, that will help sugarcoat the whole we're-rivals-in-business-now thing.
So, first "I'm in love with you", then "take off your clothes", then "I'm now your business adversary".
Piece of cake.

Excerpt:
“What?” she asked, her eyes wide and blinking. “You thought I’d just be waiting around for you to come back?”
“Yes!” It was the wrong answer, he knew, even as he said it. But it was true.
“You are so full of yourself!” She frowned. “You actually thought I’d be waiting around, pining for you, didn’t you?”
Maybe not crying herself to sleep every night, but thinking about him? Yeah. Fuck. He hadn’t been able to get her out of his mind for more than a few hours at a time. “It’s only been five months,” he said. “Is it really crazy for me to think that you didn’t get your virginity ‘taken care of’ yet?”
“Exactly! It’s been five months!” she said.
“You went twenty-five years without sex, and you couldn’t go five more months?”
“Well, it’s not like you gave me an IOU!” she shot back. “I had no idea when you were coming back, and I assumed your answer would have still been no. So yeah, I moved on, Aiden.”
“Who was it?” he asked, noting his tone was suddenly a little ominous.
“I’m not telling you that.” She looked at him like he was insane.
“Tell me, Zoe.”
“No.”
“I’ll find out. This is Appleby. I’ll probably know by the end of tonight.”
“You won’t.” She lifted her chin. “I can promise you that.”
“Bet I do.”
“Why do you really even care? Now you don’t have to do it.”
“Because you’re mine.”
Yeah, shit. See, he’d known that was the wrong answer to give. Guys didn’t go around claiming women like they were property or possessions. He knew that. He’d never had that urge before. This woman was strong and independent and confident and certainly didn’t need him for anything.
But the idea of another man touching her, seeing her naked, making her feel the ultimate pleasure, made his blood boil.
She stood, just staring at him. Then she picked up a cake ball. And threw it at him. It hit him square in the red tie and bounced back onto the table.
“You’re a jerk.”
Yeah, maybe he was. A nice guy would probably just take all her explanations and excuses about why they shouldn’t be together and admit his idea was crazy.
He didn’t say anything. He didn’t wipe away the sticky crumbs the cake ball left on his tie. He picked up the ball and rounded the worktable.
Her eyes widened, and she backed up as he came closer. He kept going. Until her back was against the front of the fridge.
He didn’t say a word as he stopped right in front of her, lifted his hand to cup her face, and leaned in.
Aiden ignored her hands on his chest. She wasn’t pushing. She wasn’t pulling him closer either, but she wasn’t trying to get away. She wasn’t lifting her knee to his balls. She wasn’t saying no.
He stared into her eyes for a long moment. She could stop this. He knew she knew that.
She didn’t.
So he kissed her.

Review:

Zoe runs her family bakery, in a small town where she grew up, with her best friend, and with no surprises. Aiden is her brother's best friend, has been around her entire life, and is suddenly back in town with a new business and with intentions of starting a serious relationship with Zoe.
Zoe likes how predictable her life is; she's comfortable, a bit afraid of stepping outside of it. While the two of them grew up together, and they both know a lot more about the other than they realize, there are still surprises to discover.
Despite how Zoe initially tried to seduce Aiden, their relationship starts a little rocky. It was fun to see Zoe throw Aiden for a loop at first. But once things got going, they were hot. And even the conflict at the end had a very sweet conclusion.
I'm a fan of brother's best friend romances, and these two were fun to follow. We saw more of Aiden's voice, I think, largely because he's starting up the new business venture that's going to be a main point in the series, so there was some attention on that. Hot Cakes has been the “competition” to, or the betrayal of, Zoe's family bakery from years ago. There's some conflict there, but there's also a lot of details to work through.
This definitely felt like the start of the series, as it took some time to get to know the cast of characters, plus the group has to settle in to buying a new business and fixing it. It's always nice to meet Nicholas' crazy cast of characters, especially in quirky small towns, and I'm looking forward to getting to see more of that. I really liked Aiden's friends/business partners. I'm looking forward to Jane and Dax's story next; I'm also really excited to get to see Piper's (and hopefully Ollie's?) story, as I definitely think she's going to be one of my favorite characters.
While this definitely felt like the start of a series, that didn't deter anything from the main romance. It's still very fun and steamy.
Nicholas' books are always a very easy read to get into; especially at a time like now when a distraction is much appreciated; it's easy to fall into her stories and go through them so quickly, a comfort and a treat.

An ARC was provided by the author and Social Butterfly for an honest review. Thank you so much!

Novel Review: Me Before You (Me Before You, #1) by Jojo Moyes

Rating (Out of 5): ~4
Genre: Adult Contemporary Romance
Publisher: Penguin
Release Date: 2012
Spoilers?: Light.

Goodreads Synopsis:

The New York Times bestseller, soon to be a major motion picture; US release on June 3, 2016.

They had nothing in common until love gave them everything to lose . . .

Louisa Clark is an ordinary girl living an exceedingly ordinary life—steady boyfriend, close family—who has barely been farther afield than their tiny village. She takes a badly needed job working for ex–Master of the Universe Will Traynor, who is wheelchair bound after an accident. Will has always lived a huge life—big deals, extreme sports, worldwide travel—and now he’s pretty sure he cannot live the way he is.

Will is acerbic, moody, bossy—but Lou refuses to treat him with kid gloves, and soon his happiness means more to her than she expected. When she learns that Will has shocking plans of his own, she sets out to show him that life is still worth living.

A Love Story for this generation, Me Before You brings to life two people who couldn’t have less in common—a heartbreakingly romantic novel that asks, What do you do when making the person you love happy also means breaking your own heart?

From the Trade Paperback edition.

The Cover:

My copy of this book was the movie cover, which I actually think is super cute. I don't usually care for the movie-version of book covers, but I do really like Emilia Clarke, and I think they look super cute as the main characters. The original covers are also really pretty, with big lettering of the title, and the colors used are pretty and fitting. I like how both covers are relatively simple and sweet.

Review:

Even though this is a very slow-burn, family-oriented story, it kept my interest from the beginning. Louisa is an odd girl, as everyone likes to remind her. She's quiet and thoughtful, but cheerful and wears odd clothing. She isn't afraid of being herself, though. The only point that bothered me about her, was how picky she was being about what job she got, despite needing one very badly. She also makes a very cringey scene at one point, at the horse race.
After losing her job, and since she lives with her family and is trying to help pay the bills as the only other person with a job, she has to get another one quick. She ends up being the caretaker of Will, a very rich previous-businessman, who's been paralyzed below the neck. He's angry, and sarcastic, and he doesn't want anyone's help or kindness. He also wants all of this to end.
I was afraid this was going to have a bad ending from the very beginning—and was pretty sure it would—but it still hurt. Louisa grows closer to Will as he starts wanting to open her world. She's been in this small town most of her life, and doesn't really consider going other places. She hasn't wanted to, or has been too afraid. He wants to change that, because he knows there's amazing things out there, even though he doesn't think he can enjoy them anymore.
This dealt with a rather dark, controversial topic, which surprised me. Part of me hates how it all ends—a big part, because it's awful and unfair and I hate it—but, I also sympathize. Will is constantly in pain and always on the edge of being even more terribly ill, and will always have to rely on someone else. He used to be extremely active and adventurous, and he doesn't want to be stuck in a chair his entire life. I get it, and it's his life, his right. It's still awful, though.
I really loved this book, honestly. Louisa and Will don't even really get to start a real romance, and yet their connection is strong. And it's awful. I haven't cried as hard at a book, ever, I don't think. I was practically crying my eyes out, for like an hour, as I read the ending. It's gut-wrenching, in ways I didn't expect, a lot more strongly than I ever expected.
I kind of don't want to read the next book, because I think this one was so good on its own, that I don't think it needs more, and I don't want to ruin it. But I also really liked these characters, and so I might pick up the next book to follow them further anyway.

Novel Review: Room by Emma Donoghue

Rating (Out of 5): ~4
Genre: Adult/Literature Fiction, Realistic
Publisher: Back Bay Books (Little, Brown and Hachette Book Group)
Release Date: 2010
Spoilers?: No.

Goodreads Synopsis:

To five-year-old-Jack, Room is the world....

Told in the inventive, funny, and poignant voice of Jack, Room is a celebration of resilience—and a powerful story of a mother and son whose love lets them survive the impossible.

To five-year-old Jack, Room is the entire world. It is where he was born and grew up; it's where he lives with his Ma as they learn and read and eat and sleep and play. At night, his Ma shuts him safely in the wardrobe, where he is meant to be asleep when Old Nick visits.

Room is home to Jack, but to Ma, it is the prison where Old Nick has held her captive for seven years. Through determination, ingenuity, and fierce motherly love, Ma has created a life for Jack. But she knows it's not enough ... not for her or for him. She devises a bold escape plan, one that relies on her young son's bravery and a lot of luck. What she does not realize is just how unprepared she is for the plan to actually work.

Told entirely in the language of the energetic, pragmatic five-year-old Jack, Room is a celebration of resilience and the limitless bond between parent and child, a brilliantly executed novel about what it means to journey from one world to another.

The Cover:

I really like the cover above, which is the one on my copy. I think it makes the emphasis on the title nice and clear, and shows the childishness of Jack, while all of the white gives an eerie or ominous feeling. There are a few other covers, as well, and I think most of them give a similarly good impression of the book. It's mostly the movie-version cover that I don't care too much for.

Review:

I've been wanting to read this book ever since it came out. I'm glad I finally got around to it.
Jack's mom was kidnapped by this guy seven years ago, but Jack is only five and he only knows this tiny room he's never left. He doesn't know what's beyond Door, and he doesn't know that he's missing anything. Anything he sees on TV, he knows is fictional.
Despite the very serious matter of this book, Jack is the one telling it, and he's a rather optimistic, cute kid. He's very smart for his age, but he also only knows the contents of Room. Everything else is fiction as far as he knows. Up until he leaves Room, at least.
I wouldn't say that Jack makes this book light-hearted, per se, but it does help. While he doesn't directly mention some of the things that happens, and a lot of things are merely said around him when they leave, it's always apparent that he's aware. He has an idea of things being wrong, even if he doesn't quite acknowledge them, or know what they are.
I really liked this book. Seeing Jack discover things is nice, even if some of those things are bad or have consequences. The ending was really well done, too. I wasn't sure where it was going to end, but the significance of that ending and where they are now, was really well done.
This is definitely a book worth reading. It was enjoyable to read, even if it was very sad at times.

NaE - Teaser 1 AN.jpg

Excerpt:

Lexi could feel Caleb’s breath on her lips, and his bunched muscles under her palm were hot and hard. She stared at his mouth. He stared at hers. And she decided that if he wasn’t going to look at her breasts, looking at her mouth like he was starving and she was a grilled BLT—his favorite food in the world—was just fine with her.
Being compared, even in her own head, to a grilled BLT might not seem sexy, but in her mind, it so was. Caleb devoured those sandwiches. He’d do almost anything for one. He made sexy moaning sounds when he first tasted them. And he’d proclaimed that hers were the best he’d ever tasted. Yeah, put that way, along with the schnapps still coating her brain, it was strangely sexy.
“Caleb.”
She watched his pupils dilate and his jaw clench.
Her hand went to the front of his shirt and she bunched it in her fists, watching his eyes. He didn’t try to stop her. Then she tugged, urging him forward.
And he came, the hand next to her hip pressing into the mattress as she tipped her head to one side. Their lips touched. Softly. Briefly. But she felt it all the way to her bones. Heat, want, relief. She suddenly had to have more. She made a little almost-a-sob sound and licked her tongue along his lower lip.
“Lex.”
Her name was more of a groan than a word. It was the sexiest thing she’d ever heard.
“Caleb,”she breathed.
Then the next groan became the sexiest thing she’d ever heard. It was a combination of hunger and resignation, and she felt like he’d just set her nerve endings on fire.
Suddenly, Caleb’s hand came up to cup the back of her head, his fingers diving into her hair. And he took over.
His mouth opened over hers and his tongue stroked deep and hot. Every glide of his tongue felt as though he was running a finger over her clit. Some were firmer, some softer, some longer, some shorter, and her need ratcheted up with each one.
She ran her hands over his chest to his shoulders and up the sides of his neck, loving the hard muscles and the heat under her palms. Then she slid her hands down his sides to the bottom of his shirt. She slipped her hands underneath, moaning as she met hot, bare skin. He sucked in a quick breath and she smiled against his lips, loving having an effect on him.
And suddenly she was on her back and Caleb was moving over her. Her hands slid to his back, the muscles there bunching as he braced himself above her, still kissing her like it was his job. Instinctively, she slid her legs apart and he settled between them. The comforter was between them, but she felt him hard and hot and deliciously heavy against her. The feel of his cock pressed against her made her ache. She’d done that to him. She’d made him hard.
Hallelujah.

Review:

Rating: ~4
Genre: Adult Contemporary Romance
Spoilers?: No.

These books are automatic buys for me, and as soon as they arrive on my kindle, I can't help but devour them. I had already started another book when this one arrived, and even though I told myself I would wait, I started it that night. I couldn't help myself, and once I start, I can't stop. Barely long enough to work, even.
Caleb is the hot older firefighter who is taking care of his niece, and Lexi is a young, single mother, who's just recently finished nursing school. They both work long hours, and have been co-parenting for a while now, just without the relationship part. When Caleb discovers that Lexi needs a place to stay, he insists that she move in with him.
Despite Caleb's impression that Lexi needs looking after, that she's meek and too young and impressionable, she proves to him that she's not. She can take care of herself, whether he wants her to or not. But Caleb has some trust and control issues, and Lexi and him have to come to an agreement on a few things.
While this is definitely a steamy romance, it's also very much a family, and parent, story, as most of this series is. Caleb's niece has some health issues that he discovers in this book, and he has a hard time dealing with that. Lexi's son is rather easy, but he's still young and has tantrums sometimes. Both kids get quite a lot of attention, as we watch how each parent handles situations and teaches them things. It's really heartwarming, most of the time, too.
Now, the romance. Caleb and Lexi have been attracted to each other for a while now. Caleb has always held back, ignoring any possibility of a relationship, whereas Lexi just plain doesn't think he's interested at this point. There are some mixed messages at first, but finally, Caleb decides to let go of his restrictions on it.
Which goes into my favorite part of the book. Lexi is sexually submissive, and Caleb mistakes this for meekness at first. The way that Lexi acknowledges this to herself, how she knows she has somewhat odd fantasies and has to consider how important they are to her, when she doesn't think Caleb will be able to handle it, is so great. And then the way that Lexi tells Caleb these things, and how they have real discussions about this aspect of their relationship, is so well done. I was surprised by this part of the story, and I really appreciate how it's all talked about and handled. And then, when things get started, it is super hot. Nicholas doesn't seem to think this is her steamiest story, (which means I must need to read more of her older stories,) but it definitely was to me. It might be the light D/s elements, but I've also thought that her more recent stories have gotten steamier than her previous ones. I'm definitely happy about it, though.
This might be one of my favorites so far, but even saying that is hard, because I've loved so many of her books. I'm excited to read the next one, (as the hint we got in this book was very promising,) and I'm already super excited for her next series. I really want Owen's story, honestly; but I do love all of the guys, and want to meet their women. Though, I do think I'll miss the parent element of this series.

TL;DR: I loved it. It was hot and intense but also super sweet, especially with the kids. Would highly recommend if you enjoy contemporary romance.

Review:

I've been following Nicholas' series for a while now, and she has quickly became one of my favorite romance authors. From the first book I picked up, I was hooked.
This new series features boys who live in New Orleans; they know how to have a good time, but they're also all part of a single-parents group. They aren't all technically single—as Lindsey isn't—but most of them are alone in one way or another and need the support of other parents in similar situations and experiences. They all have different parenting styles, they're of varying ages, and they throw ideas and worries at each other, and get feedback on them.
Lindsey isn't single, but her husband Matt is in the military, and so she only gets to see him a few times a year, if that. She's grown used to parenting on her own, and her and Matt have learned to communicate with each other. Even though Matt is so far away, they've adapted so that it still feels like he's there, as much as they can. They get time to video-chat, including him and the kids alone, and he's there to help her make big decisions.
But this year, he surprises her with a Christmas visit. One of the other single-parent members work with him for a fun way to surprise her.
It was obvious how intense their chemistry was from the very beginning. They love each other so much, even if they can't be together all that often. They're open and honest with each other, not afraid to be firm but also very comfortable with teasing each other.
I will admit I got pretty emotional while reading this book. I probably would have actually cried, if I weren't at work while reading certain scenes. It's both extremely heartwarming, and very painful, how much they love each other, how badly Matt wants to be there for his family but also wants to be doing what he's doing. And how much Lindsey misses him, but supports what he's doing. When they're officially reunited, and Lindsey gives in and cries, it's so overwhelmingly sweet. It just warms me up inside.
I definitely wish this had been a longer book, as I wanted more time with Lindsey and Matt together. I wanted them to have some more sexy-times, sure, but I also wanted to see Matt with the kids some more. I wanted to see Lindsey accepting her new dog. I wanted... more. In a good way, because I loved every piece of this little story.
I really hope that we get more of their story. Since this was a little in-between novella, I hope maybe we get another one later in the series. I want to check in with these two again.
This one was definitely another favorite in the series, and I couldn't put it down. I can't wait for the next one, either.

Review: Feral King (The Dominant Bastard Duology, #1) by Sparrow Beckett

Rating (Out of 5): ~4.5
Genre: Erotica/Adult Contemporary Romance; BDSM, Dark, MMF
Publisher: Self-Published
Release Date: June 2017
Spoilers?: No.
Buy it here: Amazon.

Goodreads Synopsis:

Minnow Korsgaard works a dead end job to make ends meet. When she’s hired to take care of a wealthy old man with no social skills, she’s excited to have found work in her field.

The new boss isn’t at all what she expected.

Severin Leduc is only thirty. He’s also a dominant, tattooed brute who’s needs someone to break through the walls he’s built. The exiled son of a wealthy family, he’s unapologetically rude and eccentric. Raised by servants, he doesn’t want extra people in his life, let alone a pretty girl who refuses to leave him in peace.

Minnow’s submissive nature sparks against Severin’s dominance. Torrid sexual attraction flares between them. Sharing her with his best friend, Rodrigo, only strengthens their growing bond, and Severin’s life is scattered into chaos. Will he learn to trust her, or will he live the rest of his life forgotten?

Warning: BDSM, dark themes. Character's memories of prior abuse may trigger some readers.

The Cover:

I really like this cover. It's a bit intense, but not a stereotypical romance cover. I think the font and placement of the cover works really well, as do all the tattoos and pose of the model.

Review:

I did not expect this book to be quite so dark, or so addicting.
Minnow ends up being Severin's new housekeeper/babysitter. She thinks she's going to be helping some old man, only to find out that he's a dominant thirty-year-old with no social skills. He wants nothing to do with anyone, doesn't believe anyone will stick around. He's constantly pushing Minnow, testing her and pushing her away. But Minnow is steady and she believes in him, and she's attracted despite the threat that he might actually hurt her.
I was surprised by how dark some of the sex gets. It's violent at times, physically scarring and rough and mean. I found it seriously hot, but I'm sure some people won't. I also rather understood why Minnow stayed and kept pushing him by being a steady presence, even if it seemed like he'd gone too far at times. I'm intrigued by the MM/MMF (or is it just MFM?) undertones that were present, and am hoping they'll become more serious in the next book. That makes me hopeful.
Severin has been through some awful things, and it's dark when he's finally honest with Minnow about it. I'm intrigued to see where that cliffhanger will go in the next one.
This book gave me a serious book hangover and it took me a while to get over it. I'm still a little obsessed, and am extremely excited for the next one to be released. I can't wait for it to arrive on my Kindle.

Novel Review: Sugar Daddies by Jade West

Rating (Out of 5): ~3.5
Genre: Adult Contemporary Romance/Erotica; MMF
Publisher: Self-Published
Release Date: July 2016
Spoilers?: No.

Goodreads Synopsis:

A sugar daddy website doesn’t seem a sound basis for an A1 life plan, but I’m a small town girl with big dreams, and there’s this one advert, this one crazy advert I can’t stop thinking about…

Two hot guys seeking their Little Miss Right.
Someone who can entertain them, amuse them, fit in with their corporate schedule.
And sex. They want sex.
Lots of sex.
Bonus, right? One major dose of epic win.

Of course, guys like Carl and Rick have their conditions. One being that they come together, or not at all.
Hell, I can live with that.

And there are no skeletons in their designer closet, none that I can find.
Just two hot sugar daddies, with particular tastes, nothing to worry about.

Until Carl and Rick spill the big one, the one that sends the girls running. A whole string of them before me, running to the hills without so much as a backward glance.

Maybe I should run, too. Thanks but no thanks, see you around, guys, nice knowing you.
But I’m already in way too deep for that.

Warning – as with every other Jade West book, reader discretion is highly advised. This novel contains vivid depictions of MMF / MM relationships, and Jade’s characters, as always, have very filthy mouths. Mature readers only, please.

The Cover:

I quite love this cover. I think it's pretty and eye-catching, and it shows what you're getting without being too cheesy, and without having two shirtless men which I appreciate.

Review:

As with all of Jade West books, I enjoyed this one. It’s not my favorite, but I liked it, and it was better than some.
Katie finds two men on a Sugar Daddies website, and decides to go for it. She needs some help in the money department, sure, but mostly she just wants to try it, to be with two guys and find out how much she wants it.
The smut is, of course, hot. It’s dirty, MMF, and I enjoyed it.
The beginning seemed a little one-sided, but about a quarter into the book, the chemistry and the attraction did start to feel real. I felt the love between the three of them, and I liked how they all worked through it. Carl and Rick are a solid couple from the beginning, and I appreciated that, and how neither of them ever wavered. Carl is also extremely honest, he doesn’t lie and he doesn’t like to hide things; I very much appreciated this. I think that Katie worked well with them, and it was obvious as their feelings grew how well they would all work out.
Katie also has a shaky relationship with her father, and her father’s family. She believes he abandoned her when she was little, and his other family dislikes her when she first meets him. Those feelings have only grown since she was little. I liked seeing how the truth came out about how things really happened, and how those relationships started to mend from there.
I quite enjoyed this book. It was fast and hot and sweet. I can’t wait for more.
