Sugarcoated - BT Banner.jpg

"You can always count on Erin Nicholas for fun, sexy contemporary romance."―Melissa Foster, New York Times bestselling author
Sugarcoated, an all-new sexy and laugh-out-loud standalone romance from New York Times bestselling author Erin Nicholas, is out now!

Sugarcoated300
She's his best friend's little sister. He's known her all his life. He's practically part of the family. There is nothing either of them could do to surprise the other at this point.
Then she showed up in his bedroom in lingerie and asked him to take her V-card.
Now, that was a surprise.
Aiden is pretty sure Zoe was equally surprised when he told her no.
To say that he didn't handle it well would be a massive understatement. Almost as massive as the amount of work he's going to have to do now to convince her that he wants her. Forever.
Right after he tells her that he's bought the company that's her bakery’s biggest competitor.
Maybe if he tells her he’s in love with her first, that will help sugarcoat the whole we're-rivals-in-business-now thing.
So, first "I'm in love with you", then "take off your clothes", then "I'm now your business adversary".
Piece of cake.

Excerpt:
“What?” she asked, her eyes wide and blinking. “You thought I’d just be waiting around for you to come back?”
“Yes!” It was the wrong answer, he knew, even as he said it. But it was true.
“You are so full of yourself!” She frowned. “You actually thought I’d be waiting around, pining for you, didn’t you?”
Maybe not crying herself to sleep every night, but thinking about him? Yeah. Fuck. He hadn’t been able to get her out of his mind for more than a few hours at a time. “It’s only been five months,” he said. “Is it really crazy for me to think that you didn’t get your virginity ‘taken care of’ yet?”
“Exactly! It’s been five months!” she said.
“You went twenty-five years without sex, and you couldn’t go five more months?”
“Well, it’s not like you gave me an IOU!” she shot back. “I had no idea when you were coming back, and I assumed your answer would have still been no. So yeah, I moved on, Aiden.”
“Who was it?” he asked, noting his tone was suddenly a little ominous.
“I’m not telling you that.” She looked at him like he was insane.
“Tell me, Zoe.”
“No.”
“I’ll find out. This is Appleby. I’ll probably know by the end of tonight.”
“You won’t.” She lifted her chin. “I can promise you that.”
“Bet I do.”
“Why do you really even care? Now you don’t have to do it.”
“Because you’re mine.”
Yeah, shit. See, he’d known that was the wrong answer to give. Guys didn’t go around claiming women like they were property or possessions. He knew that. He’d never had that urge before. This woman was strong and independent and confident and certainly didn’t need him for anything.
But the idea of another man touching her, seeing her naked, making her feel the ultimate pleasure, made his blood boil.
She stood, just staring at him. Then she picked up a cake ball. And threw it at him. It hit him square in the red tie and bounced back onto the table.
“You’re a jerk.”
Yeah, maybe he was. A nice guy would probably just take all her explanations and excuses about why they shouldn’t be together and admit his idea was crazy.
He didn’t say anything. He didn’t wipe away the sticky crumbs the cake ball left on his tie. He picked up the ball and rounded the worktable.
Her eyes widened, and she backed up as he came closer. He kept going. Until her back was against the front of the fridge.
He didn’t say a word as he stopped right in front of her, lifted his hand to cup her face, and leaned in.
Aiden ignored her hands on his chest. She wasn’t pushing. She wasn’t pulling him closer either, but she wasn’t trying to get away. She wasn’t lifting her knee to his balls. She wasn’t saying no.
He stared into her eyes for a long moment. She could stop this. He knew she knew that.
She didn’t.
So he kissed her.

Review:

Zoe runs her family bakery, in a small town where she grew up, with her best friend, and with no surprises. Aiden is her brother's best friend, has been around her entire life, and is suddenly back in town with a new business and with intentions of starting a serious relationship with Zoe.
Zoe likes how predictable her life is; she's comfortable, a bit afraid of stepping outside of it. While the two of them grew up together, and they both know a lot more about the other than they realize, there are still surprises to discover.
Despite how Zoe initially tried to seduce Aiden, their relationship starts a little rocky. It was fun to see Zoe throw Aiden for a loop at first. But once things got going, they were hot. And even the conflict at the end had a very sweet conclusion.
I'm a fan of brother's best friend romances, and these two were fun to follow. We saw more of Aiden's voice, I think, largely because he's starting up the new business venture that's going to be a main point in the series, so there was some attention on that. Hot Cakes has been the “competition” to, or the betrayal of, Zoe's family bakery from years ago. There's some conflict there, but there's also a lot of details to work through.
This definitely felt like the start of the series, as it took some time to get to know the cast of characters, plus the group has to settle in to buying a new business and fixing it. It's always nice to meet Nicholas' crazy cast of characters, especially in quirky small towns, and I'm looking forward to getting to see more of that. I really liked Aiden's friends/business partners. I'm looking forward to Jane and Dax's story next; I'm also really excited to get to see Piper's (and hopefully Ollie's?) story, as I definitely think she's going to be one of my favorite characters.
While this definitely felt like the start of a series, that didn't deter anything from the main romance. It's still very fun and steamy.
Nicholas' books are always a very easy read to get into; especially at a time like now when a distraction is much appreciated; it's easy to fall into her stories and go through them so quickly, a comfort and a treat.

An ARC was provided by the author and Social Butterfly for an honest review. Thank you so much!

Manga Review: Barakamon, Volume 12, by Satsuki Yoshino

Rating (Out of 5): ~4
Publisher: Yen Press
Release Date: October 2016
Volumes: 14+
Spoilers?: No.
Volume: 1. 11. 13.

Goodreads Synopsis:

Santa, huh...? Guess each household tends to have its own customs....
Jingle jingle jingle jingle....Christmas has come to the island!Handsome young calligrapher Seishuu Handa tries his hand at the Santa business for the first time! But could it be that Handa Claus isn't the only one who's come to visit all the nice little children...? The love of every dad warms the world in Volume 12 of this hot 'n' hearty island comedy!

Review:

Oh man, I didn't expect this to be so emotional.
Most of this volume is rather lighthearted. Naru and Hina are learning new things in school, it snows in town and everyone gets excited, no matter how little there actually is. Christmas comes. The big surprise here, though, is that Naru's father shows up in town. But he won't talk to Naru, and instead stalks her, because she doesn't remember him.
This whole plot line is extremely sad to me. It's mostly used lightheartedly, of course, but there's one scene that just got me. Aw man. I just love Naru and her relationship with Handa. It makes some sense, as well, since we've never heard anything about her parents, and we still don't know anything about her mom. The volume ends with the new year, and Naru and Handa's coming trip to Tokyo. That should be really fun.
I love this series. We finally got some character depth here, and it just hurt it was so sad and adorable. I'm excited for the next one.

Manga Review: Barakamon, Volume 6, by Satsuki Yoshino

Rating (Out of 5): ~4
Publisher: Yen Press
Release Date: August 2015
Volumes: 13+
Spoilers?: Yes.
Volume: 1. 5. 7.

Goodreads Synopsis:

I can't write, can't write, can't write at alllllllll!!

Handsome young calligrapher Seishuu Handa has returned to Tokyo for a calligraphy competition. But being away from the island is preventing him from perfecting his work...?! Meanwhile, Sensei's sudden absence is causing turmoil for his island neighbors!
The Sensei of the city and the people of the island unfurl a mature, heartwarming island comedy as a bountiful autumn approaches in Volume 6!!

Review:

This series has bought me. I’m sold, and I’m so glad.
Handa left for Tokyo, and he didn’t say anything to anybody. When the village finds out, they’re all bummed out. Naru is sulking. Miwa and the group won’t even go to his house as their base anymore. Hiro is the only one who knows where he’s went and when he’s coming back.
Most of this volume does feature Handa in Tokyo. We see him and Kawafuji and Kousuke hanging out, trying to help Handa figure out what to do for the calligraphy contest. He apologizes to the director that he slapped at the beginning of the series. And we get to meet his parents, who seem really great. His mom is understandably worried about him and doesn’t want him to go back to the village. I hope that they come down to visit and meet everyone.
Throughout all this, we get chapters of the village people. Moping, and then planning to go see Handa, until they realize he’s coming back soon. Messing up his house, then halfhazardly cleaning it up. They send him a care package, and then the scene when they greet him home is really sweet. That, along with what Handa comes up with as his contest piece, really show what they all mean to each other. They’ve become a family.
This volume was so much fun, and I loved all the subtly sweet moments mixed in. I’m excited for the next one.

Manga Review: Barakamon, Volume 5, by Satsuki Yoshino

Rating (Out of 5): ~3.5
Publisher: Yen Press
Release Date: June 2015
Volumes: 13+
Spoilers?: No.
Volume: 1. 4. 6.

Goodreads Synopsis:

This is the most realistic Tarzan make-believe I’ve ever seen……

Gaining tremendous inspiration from nature, handsome young (and bug-hating) calligrapher Seishuu Handa makes strides in his creative endeavors. But while anguishing over the individuality of his calligraphy, he receives a phone call from Tokyo, and…?!! The tale of bumbling Sensei, who doesn’t even hold back against children, and his warm island neighbors trundles into the last days of summer, which bring with them bittersweet memories!

Review:

This series is definitely growing on me. To the point where I’m looking forward to the next one.
The main characters are definitely Handa and Naru. They get the most attention, and their relationship is important to the series. But there are so many other characters, and I like that they all get enough attention. I like Miwa, who enjoys teasing Handa, and has a crush on Hiro. I think Hiro’s a fun character—he’s his own guy, and he’s cool with that. He’s a teenage guy, growing up, and I like his friendship with Handa. There’s Tama, with her yaoi imagination, even if she doesn’t realize it.
Handa has grown close to everyone there, for a reason. They’re all pretty much an extended family. There’s a lot of comedic one-chapters here; Naru’s birthday comes, Handa gets lost in the woods, Naru gets picked on and Handa and Hiro end up having a rivalry with the middle-schoolers, there’s another festival. And then there’s the cliffhanger.
When something significant and important happens, when we get real development, it’s subtle. What with all the comedy, I think it works well. And given the way this volume ends, I imagine we’ll get something in the next volume, subtle but meaningful. I’m looking forward to it.

Non Non Biyori is a delightfully charming, all-ages manga series that follows the miscellaneous adventures of a group of girls in the Japanese countryside. Striking a balance between slapstick humor and heartfelt nostalgia, Non Non Biyori features artwork that beautifully depicts nature as well as adorable characterizations of its main characters . This slice-of-life gem is sure to appeal to fans of Yotsuba&! and Azumanga Daioh.

The Non Non Biyori anime adaptation will be released on home video and digital distribution by Sentai Filmworks in early 2015, and will receive a second season anime adaptation in Spring 2015.

Welcome to the countryside village of Asahigaoka, a quaint town far-removed from the hustle-and-bustle of the big city. You couldn’t imagine a more isolated setting in all of Japan. So when Tokyo-raised elementary school student Hotaru Ichijo transfers to the tiny Asahigaoka Branch School due to her father’s job, she’s in the for the culture shock of her life!

Join Hotaru and her new friends, the eccentric Renge, and the mischevious sisters Natsumi and Komari, as they share daily adventures in the idyllic Japanese countryside.

Review:

I guess I wanted this series to be more like Yotsuba&!, but even similar to Lucky Star would have been okay. Instead, the humor didn’t match up for me.
There’s a small group of kids going to this tiny school in an equally tiny town. One of the girls is new, having just moved there. There’s a lot of odd small-farm-town life, with animals, and not a lot of things to keep the kids entertained.
Mostly it was just meh. I didn’t laugh all the way through, only small things here and there did I really like. None of the characters stood out for me. It was okay, but I’ve read better, and I probably won't stick with it.

Novel Review: Getting His Way (Sapphire Falls, #7) by Erin Nicholas

Rating (Out of 5): ~3.5
Genre: Adult Contemporary Romance
Publisher: EN Fiction
Release Date: May 10, 2016
Spoilers?: No.
Buy it here: Amazon. Barnes and Noble.

Goodreads Synopsis:

Sapphire Falls, book seven

Bryan Murray always knew that he wanted to come home to Sapphire Falls and settle down with Tessa Sheridan. After all, Tessa's sweet and kind and beautiful and planning to live in Sapphire Falls forever. Best of all, she's loved him since kindergarten. She's the perfect forever girl for him. He just didn't expect it to all happen quite like this. But a not-so-little tumble down a mountain while biking has turned his life upside down and landed him back at home.

A longtime coach to high level athletes, Bryan knows all about facing obstacles head-on and turning challenges into opportunities. So, things aren't going exactly the way he planned them-- at least Tessa is the same girl who's just been waiting for him to come home.

Tessa has been saving herself for Bryan in every way. She's even been saving her pennies so she could move to Colorado to train with him for the marathon trophies she's got her heart set on--a new passion she's discovered all because of Bryan. But now he's messed everything up. Not only is he bartending instead of coaching, but he's decided to go from a hot, sexy playboy type to sweet romantic boyfriend material. And worst of all, he's doing it all in Sapphire Falls.

What's a girl gotta do to get away from her hometown and have an adventure or two? Now that marathon training and hot sex against the shower wall are out of the question with Bryan, Tess has to come up with a new plan to make her dreams, and fantasies, come true. All while being romanced by the only man who's ever had her heart.

The Cover:

I like all of the covers in this series, and this one included. This one's very bright, and I think the sunny brightness works for the activities in this book. It's very pretty, too, and would make me interested.

Review:

I really quite enjoy this series, and while I missed the previous one, I will be going back to pick it up soon.
These books are just very fast, fun novels to pick up. I always end up reading them way faster than I expect, and they’re always cute, sweet stories that I just eat up. I’m always wanting more.
Tessa has been in love with Bryan her whole life, but he never seemed interested. But now, she’s finally decided to do what she wants, to stop waiting for him and finally go do what she wants on her own. Only, now Bryan’s back home, and he’s decided that he’s ready for Tessa.
I did really like their relationship, and their chemistry was so good. They’re clearly a great fit, and they love each other. They just haven’t had a good time for each other until now. Tessa, understandably, though, has finally gotten the motivation and guts to go out and see and do what she has always wanted. It was nice seeing how Bryan fought for it, though, and how Tessa made him work.
This was a very fun book to read, as I expected. I will be picking up the previous one soon, and waiting for the next one.
